Train delays have been the first domino to fall. Services are thinner, some routes stop altogether, and early-morning travellers are left scrambling. Miss one connection and the plan changes fast. Taxis become the backup. Or the only option. And when everyone makes that switch at once, roads clog up quickly.
Taxi demand has jumped. Drivers are stuck in longer queues, inching forward, detouring around untreated roads, crawling through congestion that should’ve cleared by now. For passengers, it means longer waits. Higher fares too. Nothing dramatic. Just enough to notice when the meter keeps ticking. Journeys that normally glide along are dragging on, minute by minute, feeling longer than they should.
Airport drop-off areas aren’t coping much better. Cars stack up early. Forecourts feel tighter. Drivers spend longer circling just to reach the terminal doors. That lost time eats into check-in. Security. The calm buffer people rely on.
Road safety groups are urging caution. RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis stated:
“A small amount of snow could cause massive delays on the road system. This is especially so if a higher number of people begin to use cars and taxi transport.”
Start traveling sooner. Order the taxis in advance. Look at updates on the train a few times over. Consider having some kind of alternate route prepared, just in case. Snow does not have to shut an airport down to create chaos. Sometimes, the hardest part of flying is everything before the terminal.
