Middle East Conflict Sparks Massive Flight Disruption for UK Travellers

Flight delays and cancellations surge as Middle East tensions disrupt UK routes, leaving travellers at Heathrow, Manchester, and Gatwick uncertain.

Air travel between the UK and the Middle East has turned messy lately. Not loud. Not dramatic at first glance. But look a little closer and the disruption is hard to ignore. Numbers from AirHelp paint the picture. Delays climbing. Cancellations too. Passengers moving through big hubs like Dubai International Airport, Hamad International Airport and Muscat International Airport are feeling it the most. Business travellers. Holidaymakers. Everyone really. The journey that used to feel routine now feels… a bit uncertain.

The numbers explain why people are worried. Between 28 February and 8 March 2026, nearly 90% of flights travelling from major Middle Eastern airports to the UK were disrupted. Delayed. Cancelled. Something going wrong. Last year, same dates? Only around 8% of flights had issues. Big difference. Almost shocking actually. Cancellations alone jumped from roughly 1% in 2025 to nearly 71% this year. Routes connecting the UK with busy hubs like Dubai, Doha and Muscat are taking the biggest hit.

"Conflict-driven disruption in the Middle East is having a significant impact on UK travellers, with thousands facing sudden delays and cancellations across some of the region’s most popular hubs."

And the stress for passengers doesn’t start at the airport anymore. It starts much earlier. Picture this. Someone in London with an evening flight from Heathrow. Before, they might leave home two hours early. Now? Maybe four. Just to be safe. Taxi drivers around Manchester and Gatwick say they are getting more early bookings. More last-minute calls too. People just don’t want to risk missing their flight.

There’s also the practical side travellers sometimes forget. Airlines still carry a duty of care during major disruption. Even if compensation rules don’t always apply. Food vouchers. Hotel stays in some cases. It depends. But checking flight updates before leaving home has become almost necessary now. A small step. Yet it can save a lot of trouble. Sometimes more than people expect.
