EasyJet Reopens Southend Base, Adding More Flight Options

EasyJet's new base at Southend Airport will introduce 20 flight routes, create jobs, and boost travel accessibility for London, Essex, and East Anglia.

EasyJet is set to reopen its base at Southend Airport in Essex on March 31, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s post-pandemic recovery. The airline had previously shut down operations at the airport five years ago due to the sharp decline in air travel during the COVID-19 crisis. The return of a permanent base will introduce flights to several new destinations and generate over 100 jobs for the local economy.

Southend Airport, which saw a 90% drop in passenger numbers during the pandemic, has been striving to regain its standing among the UK’s leading travel hubs. The relaunch of EasyJet’s base is expected to attract more travelers, strengthening the airport’s role in the region. With this expansion, Southend will now offer flights to 20 destinations, including new direct routes to Pisa, Gran Canaria, Marrakech, and Malta.

EasyJet has confirmed that three aircraft will be permanently stationed at Southend Airport, ensuring smoother operations and accommodating the anticipated rise in demand. A spokesperson for the airline stated:

"Our terminal facilities are prepared, including our revamped executive lounge alongside our restaurants and bar."

The airline’s renewed commitment to Southend comes as part of a broader strategy to expand its presence across the UK. In 2023, EasyJet established a new base at Birmingham International Airport, reinforcing its position as the UK’s largest airline. CEO Johan Lundgren has attributed the company’s success to its strong reputation, extensive network, and competitive fares.

John Upton, CEO of Southend Airport, expressed enthusiasm about the reopening, emphasizing its economic and travel benefits:

"We are thrilled to welcome an EasyJet base to Southend, supporting and creating hundreds of jobs locally as well as convenient, new and returning connections to many popular leisure and city destinations."

”This move is indicative of the demand from people in the east of London, Essex, and the wider East Anglia region who now have greater opportunities to choose to travel through our well-connected, quick and easy airport.”

The reopening of EasyJet’s base signals a step forward for both the airline and the airport, aiming to meet growing travel demand and provide greater connectivity for passengers across the UK.
