Uber Freight’s Powerloop Transforms Trucking with AI Optimization

Uber Freight introduces AI-driven dedicated tours for truck carriers

Uber Freight has launched an advanced dedicated tours program under its Powerloop initiative, aiming to provide trucking carriers with greater consistency in load availability and optimized routing. The program, which leverages AI-powered route optimization, is designed to enhance trucking efficiency and profitability by minimizing empty miles and stabilizing earnings for carriers.

The trucking industry has long struggled with fluctuating load availability and unpredictable rates, which often result in financial instability for carriers, particularly independent owner-operators. While high-demand periods may offer improved conditions, many carriers seek a more reliable solution to maintain steady operations. The new Powerloop tours program addresses these concerns by allowing carriers to commit to multi-leg journeys, reducing downtime and improving utilization.

Alyssa Correale, vice president of operations for Powerloop, explained:

"The big win with tours already is drivers don’t lose all of that productivity, the empty miles and all the other time-consuming tasks that come with chasing spot loads."

A key feature of the program is its integration with Optimal Dynamics’ AI-powered routing technology. This system updates routes every eight minutes, adapting to real-time market fluctuations and maximizing efficiency. Since its partnership with Optimal Dynamics began in May last year, Uber Freight has refined its AI capabilities to offer more effective tour recommendations.

Carriers participating in the Powerloop dedicated tours program are required to commit to at least two weeks of hauling freight using Powerloop trailers. They have the flexibility to choose specific loads within a tour or integrate their own shipments while utilizing Powerloop’s network.

Correale further noted:

"Carriers have the optionality to select which tour they want. They also have the optionality to say, ‘I want this tour but I have a different load for the third leg of the tour,’ because we’re very aware we’re a small piece of the puzzle for some carriers."

To further enhance carrier experience, Uber Freight is developing an in-app feature, set to launch in April, allowing carriers to design and select optimized tours directly within the Uber Freight app.

The program’s pay structure incentivizes long-distance hauling, ensuring carriers receive compensation based on miles covered. This approach is expected to provide greater financial predictability while improving overall logistics efficiency.
