Travel Disruptions on M1 in Bedfordshire: Police Incident Forces Closure
Travelers on the M1 in Bedfordshire faced significant disruptions due to a police-led incident that led to the closure of the motorway in both directions. The incident occurred between junctions 12, near Flitwick, and junction 13, near Milton Keynes, causing delays for thousands of drivers.
Emergency Services on the Scene
Emergency services rushed to the scene this evening to manage the situation. While the specific details of the incident remain unclear, authorities have confirmed that the closure was due to a police-led operation. As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries, and authorities are continuing to assess the situation.
National Highways stated:
"The M1 is closed in both directions between J12 near Flitwick and J13 near Milton Keynes due to a Police-led Incident."
Diversion Routes in Place
For those traveling northbound, National Highways has implemented a diversion. Drivers are advised to exit at junction 12 and follow the A5120 northeast towards Westoning. From there, they will continue through Westoning to the Steppingley Road roundabout. At the roundabout, they will take the second exit onto Steppingley Road, passing Flitwick Railway Station. Drivers will then merge onto Fordfield Road, continuing onto the A507 Ridgemont Bypass before rejoining the M1 at junction 13.
Southbound drivers will follow the same route in reverse. This diversion has been designed to manage the traffic flow and reduce congestion, but travelers are advised to expect delays.
Additional Road Closures Impacting Travel
The M1 isn’t the only major road affected by closures today. The A1 northbound is also currently closed between the A697 near Espley and the A1068 near Shilbottle due to a separate collision and subsequent barrier damage. This has further compounded travel difficulties in the region.
Updates and Information for Travelers
As of now, it remains unclear how long the M1 closure will last. Drivers are advised to stay informed by checking live updates provided by National Highways or calling the helpline at 0300 123 5000 for the latest information. National Highways reminded:
"At the moment, it's not known how long this closure will be in place."
The situation is ongoing, and authorities are working to clear the incident area as quickly as possible. Travelers are urged to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys.
