Private Hire Drivers in London Face Licensing Disruptions
Transport for London's (TfL) licensing system is once again under scrutiny as private hire drivers, including many working with Uber, report widespread technical failures. The disruptions have led to licence application errors, repeat documentation requests, and sudden invalidation of approved submissions—issues that directly affect drivers' ability to work.
The GMB Union, representing a large number of private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers in the UK, has raised the alarm over these persistent problems. They report that drivers who correctly submitted required documents are later being informed that their applications are incomplete or invalid, causing significant delays.
This situation follows previous incidents of system-related setbacks, suggesting deeper infrastructure concerns within TfL's digital processing platforms. The union has formally reached out to city officials for immediate action.
Steve Garelick, GMB Regional Organiser, stated:
"Our members are extremely upset by this situation. These persistent system failures are directly impacting their ability to work and earn a living."
He further commented:
"As it stands, the system is currently not fit for purpose. We are urging TfL to resolve these ongoing problems and prevent further hardship for our members."
With over 100,000 licensed private hire drivers in London, reliable access to the TfL licensing system is crucial. Delays not only hurt drivers but also impact the wider travel network and customer service standards.
