UK Rail Travel Set to Rise as Passengers Prioritize Speed and Ease

A new survey shows Brits increasingly favor faster, more direct train travel, signaling a shift from flights to rail across the country.

Recent Survey Reveals Growing Appetite for Train Travel in the UK

A recent survey by Hitachi Rail, which gathered responses from over 11,000 individuals across multiple countries, indicates a growing preference for train travel among UK passengers. According to the data, 36% of respondents in the UK expect to travel more by train in the next five years. The key drivers behind this projected increase are direct and faster journeys, identified by 35% and 34% of participants, respectively, as the most influential factors.

To meet these evolving expectations, Hitachi Rail is developing solutions that prioritize efficiency and connectivity. Among its most promising innovations is battery-powered train technology capable of operating on non-electrified tracks, allowing for expanded service coverage and the potential for more direct routes. These trains also promise to increase seating capacity by approximately 20% on selected routes, such as those operated by Grand Central.

Despite the growing interest in rail travel, the survey also highlighted overcrowding as a major deterrent for passengers. Addressing this issue through increased capacity and infrastructure upgrades remains crucial to sustaining long-term growth in rail usage.

Public Support for Shifting from Air to Rail Travel

The survey reveals a substantial portion of the public supports policy changes aimed at promoting rail over air travel. Specifically, 48% of respondents favor increasing taxes on air travel to fund improvements in rail infrastructure, while 38% are opposed. Moreover, 57% support discontinuing short-haul flights where viable rail alternatives exist. These findings reflect a wider societal shift toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation options.

Jim Brewin, Chief Director of UK & Ireland at Hitachi Rail, stated:

"The findings of this global survey show that appetite for rail travel remains strong in the UK. Working with our industry partners, Hitachi Rail can play a role encouraging that sustainable mobility transition in Britain, providing the solutions that provide the faster or more direct journeys passengers want."

Rising Demand on Intercity Routes

The demand for intercity rail services, especially on the East Coast Mainline connecting London with northern cities such as Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness, has now surpassed pre-pandemic levels. These routes offer a greener alternative to air travel and have become increasingly popular among passengers seeking convenience and sustainability.

Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Rail Delivery Group, stated:

"Rail plays a vital role in connecting communities, supporting economic growth, and offering a more sustainable way to travel. This new research shows that people are increasingly looking for quicker, simpler ways to get from A to B and rail is well positioned to meet the evolving needs of customers."

The Importance of Infrastructure Investment

Forecasts from the Department for Transport and the Office of Rail & Road suggest that rail passenger numbers in the UK could increase by between 37% and 97% over the next 25 years, depending on the level of government support. This outlook highlights the need for continued investment in rail infrastructure, including both rolling stock and track enhancements.

Darren Caplan, Chief Executive of the Railway Industry Association (RIA), stated:

"This new analysis follows recent figures from the Department for Transport and the Office of Rail & Road showing passenger numbers hitting and often surpassing pre-pandemic levels."

As demand continues to grow, the case for building a more resilient, efficient, and passenger-focused rail network becomes stronger. The future of UK travel may well depend on how effectively the rail industry adapts to these expectations.
