Serious Crash on A1 Northbound Closes Road Between Alnwick and Northgate

A vehicle-deer collision on the A1 caused injuries and forced emergency services to close the northbound carriageway overnight.

A major traffic disruption occurred on the A1, the United Kingdom’s longest road, following a serious collision involving a vehicle and a deer. The incident took place on the northbound carriageway between Alnwick and Northgate on the night of May 13, prompting an emergency response and road closure in the affected area.

The North East Ambulance Service responded swiftly to the scene. A spokesperson stated:

"We were alerted at 20.17 today (13 MAY) to a vehicle which was reported to have rolled over on the A1 northbound carriageway between Shilbottle and Alnwick. We dispatched two paramedic ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic and a clinical team leader, who treated one person with chest and leg injuries before conveying them to hospital."

Shortly afterward, Northumbria Police also addressed a related incident on the A697, a nearby route, where a separate vehicle struck a deer near Powburn. The incident occurred just before 10:30pm and temporarily closed the road for vehicle recovery. A police spokesperson confirmed:

"Just before 10:30pm last night (Tuesday), we received a report of a single-vehicle collision on the A697 near the Plough Inn in Powburn, Northumberland. It was reported a car has collided with a deer. Thankfully, the occupant of the vehicle was not injured in the incident. The road was closed for a short time to allow for the vehicle to be recovered but re-opened to traffic just after 1am."

Incidents involving deer are not uncommon on rural stretches of UK roads, particularly in areas like Northumberland where wildlife is abundant. The A1, stretching over 400 miles from London to Edinburgh, is a critical route for both local and long-distance travel, and any disruption has significant travel implications.
