Passengers at Heathrow can now keep liquids up to 2 litres and laptops in their hand luggage with new high-tech scanners, cutting queues and plastic waste, though travellers should check rules at other UK airports.
Passengers moving through Heathrow are starting to notice it. Something feels different. Security, of all places, isn’t dragging anymore. After years of delays and talk, the airport has finally rolled out its new high-tech scanners across every terminal. Quietly. No big announcement. But the change is there.
For anyone flying out, the main difference is simple. Liquids stay in your bag. Laptops too. Containers up to two litres are now allowed, and those clear plastic bags? Not really needed anymore. Sounds small. It’s not. Queues move quicker. Trays feel less stressful. And that last-minute panic of unpacking everything… mostly gone now.
The technology behind it is serious stuff. Advanced CT scanners create detailed 3D images of cabin bags, allowing security staff to spot problems without asking passengers to open everything up. Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye stated:
“This £1bn investment means passengers can spend less time preparing for security and more time enjoying their journey.”
But airports don’t change in isolation. Passenger numbers remain high, and even positive upgrades can cause short-term disruption. Many travellers are arriving earlier than usual, unsure if their terminal is fully running the new system. Some don’t want to risk it. That uncertainty has pushed more people towards taxis and private cars, especially during busy morning departures.
Drivers have noticed. Taxi and ride-hail demand around Heathrow is up. Drop-off zones are packed at peak times. It’s a familiar calculation. Security rules changing? Build in extra time. Get dropped right outside. Skip the train stress. Easy.
Thing is, Heathrow isn’t like everywhere else. Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh… they’ve upgraded scanners too. But lots of UK airports? Still 100ml limit. So if you’re flying out of Heathrow and landing somewhere else, the rules can flip mid-trip. Easy to forget. Easy to get caught out.
For travellers, the message is simple. Don’t just think about the flight. Check the security rules. Both ends. Factor in traffic. Taxi queues. Busy drop-off zones. Especially at peak hours. Pre-booking transport? Might just save time. And stress. Later on.
Heathrow’s scanner rollout is a proper step forward. Fewer queues. Less plastic. A smoother start to the journey. But until the rules match up across the UK… airports stay busy. Roads stay packed. Taxis? Still the safest bet if you want to avoid the panic.
